Recognition

On today's date 15 years ago, January 15th 1992, Croatia was recognized as an independent country by the EU, which was the turning point of our struggle for independence. It was a middle of Winter, the war was everywhere, but people were happy that our struggle was finally receiving some much needed international recognition. We felt that the moral victory was won at that point, and it was only a matter of time before we were completely and unequivocally free. This was a huge boost to the morale for the Croatians in Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose bloody ordeal still lay in the future at that point. We were apprehensive, but proud. Proud of our homeland, and proud of it had achieved at that point. We knew that Croatians will never have to be second rate citizens in their own homeland ever again.

Car music

When I bought my car many years ago, the built-in tape player was already practically obsolete. The cassette tapes were on their way out, and CDs were all the rage. Most of my music collection was already on CDs, and the only way I could play them was by connecting a tape-adapter to a portable CD player, which stopped working after a while. However, that tape adapter came in handy once the portable MP3 players became all the rage, so I actually felt fortunate that I was not stuck with a CD player. These days, it seems, the CDs are going the way of tapes, and the new cars have MP3 links already built in. Maybe it's time for me to think about getting a new car.

Happy New Year!

The new year has already started, one whole week of January has elapsed, and we still continue to be blessed with unusually good weather. Over the last few weeks the DePauw gym has been closed more often than not, so Sharmin and I were compelled to go for runs outdoors. Which, in this sort of weather, was not such a bad thing after all.
