A little piece of heaven

Years ago, when I first arrived in the US, one of the new foods I encountered were bagels and cream cheese. Needless to say, it was one of the culinary items that did not take me too long to get used to. As time went on, however, I had become much more conscious of what I eat, and with cream cheese having more grams of fat than even my all-time favorite spread mayonnaise, it gradually all but disappeared from my menu. Until now. A couple of weeks back I gave a try to fat free cream cheese. Usually I am very sceptical of fat-free cheeses, but this turned out to taste much better than I had imagined. So the cream cheese has entered my breakfast menu once again. M-m-m, delicious.

It's getting hot in here

The temperatures across the US have reached the unprecedented highs. People are really suffering, and even in the Midwest it's been almost 100 F for the past few days. However, the weather is not too humid, so I am not complaining too much. I'd rather have this kind of weather than 80 F with really high humidity.

Orkut King

A friend of mine heard from another friend that I am an "Orkut King". Now that he also joined Orkut, he believes that assertion and he asked me for a few tips for an Orkut newbie. I thought I might share those here as well:

Join communities that you feel strongly about. Contribute a lot and
try to be helpful in answering others' questions. If there is no
community that exactly matches your interests (which is pretty hard
these days) start one of your own. Humor goes a long way, so if in
doubt, crack a joke or two. Add people to your friends list whose
posts you appreciate. Unless there is something that really puts you
off in someone else's profile, be willing to accept other's friend
initiation. Leave scraps in people's scrapbooks (THE way of
communication on Orkut). If they scrap you, you scrap them back soon
(within a week is fine). Always remember people's birthdays. And if
you are really, really, serious about Orkut (which I guess even I am
still not): learn Portuguese.

Mostar

I talked to my uncle and a cousin yesterday on the phone. They live in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovia. Mostar is a nice town, and I go there for a visit every time I go home, which is not all that often these days. There is one problem with Mostar though: it gets really hot over there in the Summer. In the old days the daytime temperature would easily reach 40C, and Mostar regularly made the evening news. My brother and I, crazy about basketball that we were in those days, would still go out and play a game or two despite the scorching heat. Well, yesterday I found out that the temperature there has been well over 45C these days, and the authorities are seriously considering declaring an elementary catastrophe. Most of the people over there don't have an AC, and I can only imagine what must they be going through. I wouldn't be entirely sure, but I would bet that not even my brother and I would have played basketball in this kind of weather.
